On March 11, 2016, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published the final 24-month science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) optional practical training (OPT) rule. The change went into effect on May 10, 2016. As a result, campuses across the nation are adjusting their student advising and processes to accommodate new STEM OPT applications.
