STEM OPT II: Effective Institutional Policies and Practices

On March 11, 2016, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published the final 24-month science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) optional practical training (OPT) rule. The change went into effect on May 10, 2016. As a result, campuses across the nation are adjusting their student advising and processes to accommodate new STEM OPT applications.

As a follow-up to the NAFSA e-Learning Seminar, STEM OPT Update: Implications and Preparation for Changes , international education experts will share policies and procedures implemented at various institutions. Presenters will discuss the challenges they've faced in this transition process, and how they've overcome them.

In this on-demand NAFSA e-Learning Seminar, expert DSOs share their successful STEM OPT policies and practices. Steve Springer, NAFSA's Director of Regulatory Practice Liaison, also provides an update on NAFSA's related liaison efforts.
